Germany has chosen! In the weekend of their parliamentary elections, Germany’s Eurovision jury also made the important decision of who gets to perform in next week’s final of Chefsache ESC. Nine out of fourteen acts qualified for the grand final.
Raab’s decision
The semifinal of Chefsache ESC, Germany’s new selection procedure, took over three hours to complete. A jury comprised of Yvonne Catterfeld, Elton, Max Giesinger and Eurovision legend Stefan Raab was tasked with eliminating five acts from the show.
After all acts had performed, early frontrunners for victory in Germany seem to be Abor & Tynna with their German language electro dance pop number “Baller” and British singer Moss Kena’s “Nothing can stop love”. However, with a song written by Anderz Wrethov and other well known names, TikTok star Lyza with “Lovers on Mars” may also be a favourite. Outsiders in the pack are the medieval metal crossover rockers Feuerschwanz with their “Knightclub”.
The nine qualifiers, in alphabetical order, are:
- Abor & Tynna – Baller
- Benjamin Braatz – Like you love me
- Cosby – I’m still here
- Feuerschwanz – Knightclub
- Julika – Empress
- Leonora – This bliss
- Lyza – Lovers on Mars
- Moss Kena – Nothing can stop love
- The Great Leslie – These days
That means that Cloudy June, From Fall to Spring, Jaln, Cage and Jonathan Henrich were eliminated from the competition and no longer have a chance of representing Germany at the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 in Basel.
Chefsache ESC
This year, Stefan Raab has returned to the Eurovision universe. Previously, Raab was involved in the German selection quite a lot. His adventure started with a sixth place for Guildo Horn in 1998 as composer and conductor. Two years later, he took to the stage himself with “Wadde Hadde Dudde Da” and placed fifth. He then supported Max Mutzke on his bid to become Germany’s Eurovision pick and succeeded once again, placing eighth. The big years followed from 2010, when a newly started talent show process led by Raab gave Germany its second Eurovision win, as Lena took Europe by storm with “Satellite”. Also the next two entries, “Taken by a stranger” and “Standing still”, scored top ten positions.
Germany has had a lot of misfortune at the contest since Stefan Raab pulled out of the delegation. The country is now getting their hopes up with Raab back in charge. Last year, Germany placed twelfth with Isaak. Before that, they had four consecutive bottom two results in the Grand Final, finishing dead last in both 2022 and 2023.
