Eurostar Review 2016

Eurostar Review 2016

Every year, we gather a few former Eurovision participants to review the entries on offer for 2016. This year, we’ve once again asked some of these Eurostars what they thought. Unfortunately, not everyone completed their reviews in time, but still, it’s worth checking these out! This year, we have people ranging from 1971 to 2015, solo artists, groups and parts of groups, qualifiers and non-qualifiers. Our Eurostars: Séverine (Monaco 1971) Nicola (Romania 2003) Marjolein Spijkers (The Netherlands 1997) Lisa Andreas (Cyprus 2004) Stefan Filipović (Montenegro 2008) Baccara (Luxembourg 1978) Alex Larke (United Kingdom 2015) Séverine Gabriela Gunčíková – I Stand This song has a beautiful melody, I like the music. Her voice is really nice too. Yes, I am a fan of this song, I really like it!   Sandhja – Sing It Away It’s not bad, I don’t mind the song itself. However, it really isn’t my preferred style of music. Unfortunately.    Greta Salóme – Hear Them Calling I don’t have many words for this. I just don’t like it much.   Amir – J’Ai Cherché I can only say that this song is much better than what we’ve sent in previous years. I however can’t imagine us winning the …
First semi-final exit poll after dress rehearsal

First semi-final exit poll after dress rehearsal

Last night we had the second dress rehearsal (jury show) for the first semi-final. The audience was almost full with members of the public allowed to watch the show. We took advantage of this and sent our roving reporter Edward Montebello out into the crowds after the show to hear the first reactions of the man (or woman, or child) on the street about the hopefuls from the show. Here is what they had to say:

We’re now reaching the business end of Eurovision fortnight, with dress rehearsals starting today! Day 6 Review: What have we learned today?

Day 6 Review: What have we learned today?

Another hectic day full of rehearsals at the Globe Arena. Twenty one participants were trying to improve their performance and rehearse it again today. Obviously, there are entries that are considerably better than others and there is nothing surprising about it. That is why we can learn what looks and sounds better and what is better not to do on stage. That is what we want to share with you, guys!   It’s a great idea to “plant” some trees on stage! Jamala from Ukraine did it and, as far as we see, this “Jamala’s tree” has watched a lot of attention. Now she and her tree are the 2nd favorites in the bookies’ odds. And this is quite something! Who has some stage secrets from us? Lithuania does! Donny definitely doesn’t want us to know he has some backing singers…intelligent guy! You can check out what we mean on a photo below. It’s really funny;) Who is bringing the 70s funky vibe to the Eurovision stage?   That is Laura Tesoro from Belgium. She looks so catching in her silver mini-shorts and jacket! The backing singers are also very stylish. Her performance is very confident on the whole! Is it …
Rehearsals Day 6: No mute day! Semifinal 2

Rehearsals Day 6: No mute day! Semifinal 2

Today sees the second rehearsal period for each of the songs in semifinal 2. They each have 20 minutes on stage, providing time for two or three runthroughs of each song. Follow our instagram, twitter and snapchat (escXtra) for live updates from inside the arena and join our live stream at escXtra.com/live to hear the audio in the press centre with our commentary. Find out how your favourites are sounding! Germany first rehearsal:  Jamie-Lee stands alone on stage with an outfit and staging very similar to the official preview video. Vocally this is steady- the backing vocalists are hidden and Jamie-Lee stays central on the stage at first, before walking to one side in the second verse. There are leafless tree branches on stage, but we could do with a little more smoke to hide their trolley wheels on the low shots! At the end, Jamie-Lee moves forward to the satellite stage. Italy first rehearsal: Francesca stands in a row of flowers on stage and she doesn’t move from the mic stand, on screen there are cartoony snapchatlike graphics of hearts and stars. It sounds kooky but it all rather works. She stands in a small patch of garden and is surrounded …
Day 5 Review: What have we learned today?

Day 5 Review: What have we learned today?

Twenty countries had the possibility to make a rehearsal on Eurovision stage today. And as we have already mentioned, they had only 20 min to do their best. These are the top highlights of the day, or the things we have learned: How to transform your dress in 3 minutes? Nina from Croatia definitely knows the answer and has demonstrated it perfectly on stage today.                        How to make best use of wind machine? Gabriela from Czech Republic has effectively used it on her hair. Amazing vocals and beautiful hair! Who is the king of 3D? Without any doubts, Sergey Lazarev (Russia). Spectacular performance and impressive 3D screen behind Sergey. The only thing we don’t know yet about him is who is his only one;) How not to fall in love at first sight? Freddie from Hungary is so far keeping in secret the answer to this question, cause everyone is crazy about this Hungarian macho. Is his handsomeness going to help him get to the final? We will see very soon. How to chose the best outfit? Samra from Azerbaijan is trying to figure out this point. And what …
