We will be providing a live stream throughout each and every day of the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 as well as reports from every rehearsal that takes place over the two weeks. ESCXTRA are live from Lisbon for day 4 of rehearsals ahead of the Eurovision Song Contest 2018! The countries rehearsing today, in chronological order, are Georgia, Poland, Malta, Hungary, Latvia, Sweden, Montenegro, Slovenia and Ukraine. The latest artist to rehearse is AWS for Hungary. We have just watched their first run through of Viszlát Nyár live on screen and here is our initial reaction. Staging The performance begins with quick camera shots consisting of each band member before switching to a wide shot of them rocking out before the vocals start. Once the vocals do begin, the camera focuses on the lead vocalist but we see one of the guitarists performing from the bridge. The lighting is blue for the verses, turning gold for each chorus with the addition of white strobe lighting. For the second verse, the lead vocalists move onto the outer ring of the stage. The first artist to rehearse is Christabelle for Malta. We have just watched their first run through of Taboo live on screen and here is our initial reaction. Staging Christabelle has brought four double-sided screens with her! The opening shots focus on Christabelle stood in the centre of the four screens which surround her, positioned at diagonal angles. They’ve recreated the people in the box from MESC by putting videos onto the screens of people in the box. There’s also an augmented reality heart being used too which appears over her chest. In the second verse, Christabelle comes out of the screen cube and a dancer takes her place in the middle of the screen cube instead. Lasers are used in the second chorus and instrumental …

The latest artist to rehearse is Gromee feat. Lukas Meijer for Poland. We have just watched their first run through of Light Me Up live on screen and here is our initial reaction. Staging The opening shot of the performance is Lukas, with an immediate switch to Gromee behind his DJ decks. The camera constantly switches behind the two throughout the track. Gromee’s DJ deck and the surrounding stage lighting begin in blue, and change to pink for the chorus. During the first chorus, we see the three backing vocalists to the right of Gromee, with a guitarist to the left. As we approach the first instrumental, we see Gromee do his arm snake dance to a camera behind him at the back of the stage …

The first artist to rehearse is Ethno-Jazz Band Iriao for Georgia. We have just watched their first run through of For You live on screen and here is our initial reaction. Staging The performance begins with a close-up shot of Iriao’s lead singer, with the camera then panning to a wider shot showing all three vocalists spread out across the stage and the keyboardist on the right. The blue lighting changes to red before the minute mark, and we also then see the guitarist on stage. By the minute mark, the vocalists are now in a line, standing close together. The lead singer keeps turning towards his other band members creating a sense of unity and friendship. Towards the end, the vocalists switch positions and engage in …

Daily Press Poll 2018: Results from day 3 of rehearsals

Day three of rehearsals at the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 has come to an end! We’ve seen the first 9 entries from the second semi-final take to the stage. As has been done in previous years, we have conducted the daily press poll to discover how members of the press rate today’s performances! How it works After the conclusion of today’s rehearsals, we asked 35 members of the press to rate today’s performances based on their rehearsals rather than by their favourite songs. To do this, each press member chose their top 3 performances and we allocated 5 points to their favourite, 3 points to their second favourite and 1 point to their third favourite. The final artist to rehearse today is Jessica Mauboy. We have just watched their first run through of We Got Love live on screen for Australia and here is our initial reaction. Staging The stage is dark for the beginning of the performance, with LED strip lights either side of Jessica. She performs fast arm choreography throughout the song, which is accompanied by fast camera switches more often than not. For the second verse, Jessica begins sitting on the stage at the centre of the two sets of diagonal LEDs. During the verses, the rest of the stage is dark with only the LED stripes lighting up. WATCH: Greece’s Yianna Terzi – “I’m very proud of my song”

Greece’s Yianna’s Terzi was next in line to be interviewed on our live stream, following her first rehearsal of ‘Oniro Mou’.   She spoke to Brent for a brief catch up on how things were going, in which she expressed how proud she was of her song and to sing in her native tongue. The next artist to rehearse is Waylon. We have just watched their first run through of Outlaw In ‘Em live on screen for The Netherlands and here is our initial reaction. Staging Waylon is joined by four dancers on a podium. Waylon is standing a bit higher, than the others. Waylon is only standing on his higher podium with his guitar and sings while his dancers, dance around him. Later one dancer makes backflips on the catwalk. In the beginning, his dancers are “playing” a guitar and one on the drums, before they drop off the podium. Vocals Waylon is delivering the vocals. As he is not moving, he can focus on his vocals for his song. There is no backing …

The next artist to rehearse are DoReDos. We have just watched their first run through of My Lucky Day live on screen for Moldova and here is our initial reaction. Staging They have a white box on the stage. With three doors which also function as windows. They step out separately in the beginning and telling a story with the box in the background. It’s about stealing the girl. In the end, they all get out of the box and get joined by their background dancers. The way they tell the story with the background dancers/singers in the box is very creative and they deliver a funny story to their song. Vocals Vocals are good. There is a lot of moving …

The next artist to rehearse is Julia Samoylova for Russia. We have just watched their first run through of I Won’t Break live on screen and here is our initial reaction. Staging Julia is performing from the top of a white mountain which is around two and a half metres tall. The camera begins on Julia who is lit up whilst the mountain remains dark. Just before the first chorus begins, one male and one female dancer emerge to perform some interpretative choreography. From the second chorus, there are projections onto the mountain and the floor that immediately surrounds her, creating a dark and icy feeling. However, for the final chorus, her dancers move onto the outer ring of the stage as the lighting changes …
