The 71st annual Sanremo Music Festival came to a close this morning and with it, a new champion emerged. Måneskin upset the odds and won the competition with Zitti e buoni. The band are expected to accept RAI’s invitation to represent Italy in Rotterdam.
Twenty-six become three
At the start of the six-hour final of the Festival di Sanremo, twenty-six acts were competing for the victory. The first couple of nights had been won by Ermal Meta, Annalisa and the duo Colapesce & Dimartino. Each of them won a different section of the vote on their night, meaning that the full result was still unclear and up in the air.
When, after all acts had performed, hosts Amadeus and Fiorello went through the ranking to find out who the superfinalists were, it became clear that of the winners, Annalisa was the first to see her hopes being dashed. She finished in seventh place with her song Dieci. Colapesce & Dimartino’s Musica Leggerissima only just missed out on the superfinal, finishing in fourth.
Other favourites who failed to make the cut were Madame, Willie Peyote and Irama. The eventual top three consisted of Sanremo debutants Måneskin, as well as Eurovision 2018 representative Ermal Meta and his 2016 predecessor, Francesca Michielin together with Fedez.
Måneskin emerge victorious
In the superfinal, the winner eventually received 53.5% of all the votes – a staggering number. The Rome based rock group Måneskin turned out to be the winner of the 71st Festival di Sanremo. Back in 2017, the group rose to fame after finishing as runners-up on the Italian X Factor.
Ermal Meta, who undoubtedly was the big favourite ahead of tonight, only finished in third. Chiamami Per Nome by Francesca Michielin and Fedez came second. The full results, with the breakdown per jury, will be published later this week.
It is unclear whether Måneskin will accept the invitation to represent Italy at the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest in Rotterdam. During the broadcast, musical director and presenter Amadeus confirmed that, whoever would win, would go to Rotterdam. However, a tweet published by the official @Eurovision account tells us confirmation will come in soon. This is not uncommon, with Italy usually confirming their entrant a day after the Festival di Sanremo. Confirmation should normally come from the official Italian Eurovision account.
