Vidbir 2022 final to have live audience

Vidbir 2022 will take place this year with an audience. According to a post from OGAE Ukraine fan community, this year’s Ukrainian national final Vidbir will take place with a live studio audience.

Tickets are said to be available soon, with an anticipated 500-600 people to be able to attend the event. This year Vidbir will consist of just one grand final show, rather the semi-finals format of earlier years. The Vidbir 2022 grand final will be broadcast live on UA: PERSJYI on 12 February at 18:00 CET.

This is great news for Ukraine as not all countries have been able to host shows with audiences in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Estonia’s Eesti Laul will not have an audience for it’s semi-finals, and recently Sweden cancelled it’s Melodifestivalen tour due to government venue capacity restrictions.

The 27 shortlisted acts

Ukrainian broadcaster UA:PBC revealed the 27 names, who have a chance to get selected for the national final Vidbir. The show will take place on February 12th with a total of eight songs competing. The list will be narrowed down to 8 finalists and revealed next week. The winner will represent Ukraine in Turin at the Eurovision Song Contest

Ukraine in the Eurovision Song Contest

Ukraine made their Eurovision debut back in 2003. The first to fly the country’s flag at the contest was Oleksandr Ponomariov who finished 14th with his entry “Hasta la vista“. Despite the underwhelming start, Ukraine didn’t have to wait long to achieve good results. In fact, in 2004 Ruslana triumphed in Istanbul with her charismatic entry “Wild Dances“. Ukraine also won the contest in 2016 with Jamala and her entry “1944“. Besides their two victories, Ukraine also placed second twice in 2007 and 2008 and third in 2013.

Following Eurovision’s cancellation in 2020, UA:PBC quickly announced that Go_A would return to represent Ukraine at the 2021 contest in Rotterdam with “Shum”. Their return to the Eurovision following their 2019 withdrawal was a success, with GO_A finishing 5th with 364 points, placing 2nd with the televote behind overall winners Måneskin.

Furthermore, Ukraine is now the only country that has a 100% qualification record for the Grand Final. Can they maintain this record in 2022?
