The final artist to rehearse is Eleni Foureira. We have just watched their first run through of Fuego live on screen for Cyprus and here is our initial reaction. Staging Four female backing dancers, LOTS of hair flipping and extremely energetic, sultry dancing. There were tons of “Woooooooooow!”s from the press centre. It starts with a Eleni’s silhouette against laseres which immediately grabs your attention. There’s lots of visual effects being overlayed on screen, clouds with lightning appearing at the sides, flames shooting out from Eleni…..the whole press centre is just in absolute awe at how amazing this is. This could very easily get top 5 – that was unbelievably good! Vocals She managed to hold her vocals exceptionally through …

The next artist to rehearse is Ryan O’Shaughnessy. We have just watched their first run through of Together live on screen for Ireland and here is our initial reaction. Staging The performance begins with a focus on Ryan and his guitar and makes an immediate effort to connect with the camera. The camera then pans over to a girl on the piano who is also providing backing vocals. During the first chorus, the camera pans around the two of them. As the second verse begins, we see the first glimpse of the male dancers from the Together music video as they come over the bridge to the main stage. As they do this, the camera shots interchanges between them and Ryan. The dancers then recreate the bench scene from …

The next artist to rehearse is Zibbz. We have just watched their first run through of Stones live on screen for Switzerland and here is our initial reaction. Staging The first thing I heard from the start of this “OOOH drums!”. Wiv is very pleased! Corinne is making great use of the bridges of the stage, firstly using the left bridge for the first chorus, then the right bridge for the second. It really feels more like you’re at some sort of gig with her rather than at Eurovision, and we absolutely adore it! There’s also a lot of dragging the microphone stand around – Corinne really seems very rebellious here and she absolutely owns it. She even climbs onto …

The next artist to rehearse is Sevak Khanagyan. We have just watched their first run through of Qami live on screen for Armenia and here is our initial reaction. Staging Sevak is surrounded by thin columns, taller behind him and then slowly getting shorter to the front of him. After the first chorus, the wind machine begins to kick in which looks pretty cool. Nearer to the end, the lighting turns up and it gets very bright….but it’s not as impressive as we’ve seen in the previous rehearsals. It’s definitely the most muted response from the press centre that we’ve had so far. Vocals Sevak is mostly singing exceptionally and when it hits the last chorus, he’s spot on with …

The latest artist to rehearse is Saara Aalto. We have just watched his first run through of Monsters live on screen and here is our initial reaction. Staging Saara has a substantially sized on-stage prop in the centre of the stage, consisting of two staircases and lots of LED lights. It has the effect of a spider’s web. She begins the performance on a platform connected to her on-stage contraption which spins around as in the Domino prop from UMK. For the second verse, she moves onto the stage. Saara performs choreography with her four dancers which continues into the second chorus. In an unusual move for a first run through, there are pyro fountains for the beginning of the …

The next artist to rehearse is Yianna Terzi. We have just watched their first run through of Oniro Mou live on screen for Greece and here is our initial reaction. Staging The stage begins bathed in blue lighting which quickly turns to gold as Yianna’s begins singing the first verse. Yianna uses a series of arm movements, which is emphasises by the blue paint covering Yianna’s left hand. The wind machine kicks in halfway through the first chorus and continues to the end, which works well with the excess material attached to Yianna’s costume. For the instrumental middle eight, Yianna turns away from the audience to a camera behind the stage. She makes some powerful poses, reminiscent of her music video. Likewise, she sits …

The latest artist to rehearse is Cesár Sampson. We have just watched his first run through of Nobody But You live on screen and here is our initial reaction. Staging The performance starts with Cesár on his knees, lit from only one side. At one point you can’t see his body and he literally looks like a floating head which is kind of disturbing. Then the lights come up and he is stood on some sort of….HUGE platform which is covered in lights on the underside, it’s almost like a UFO. The platform eventually lowers and there are lots of bright lights from behind him, giving an almost angelic effect! In the last chorus there’s some rather strange effects with …

The next artist to rehearse is Franka. We have just watched their first run through of Crazy live on screen for Croatia and here is our initial reaction. Staging We begin with a close shot of Franka, with dramatic flashing lighting used as the beat comes in. Already there is lots of smoke used creating a mysterious feel to the stage. Eurovision fans will immediately make comparisons to the last couple of Armenian entries, with Franka using lots of arm choreography and fast camera cuts for the “love love love” hook. From the second verse, Franka moves around the stage and a wind machine launches into action. In general, the lighting is a mix of blue, red and black. There are tears falling …

The first artist to rehearse is Eye Cue. We have just watched their first run through of Lost and Found live on screen and here is our initial reaction. Staging In the start of the song, with the drums, a kind of flickering static effect is used, which elicited plenty of “Oooh”s from the press centre. Once the first chorus hits, Marija joins her backing dancers/singers and dances with them to one side of the stage, it looks GREAT. Lots of sultry looking at the cameras and everyone looks extremely comfortable. Very well done, F.Y.R. Macedonia! Vocals Vocals were absolutely spot on, after so many worries with Marija’s vocals in the pre parties….she absolutely NAILED it! For the long note …
