Today the EBU has confirmed that 37 countries will participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 to be held in Malmö, Sweden next May.
Malmö to host 37 delegations for Eurovision 2024
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has confirmed a total of 37 countries will take part in the Malmö hosted Eurovision Song Contest 2024.
Overall, a total of 35 broadcasters from the Liverpool contest will return. Next year marks the return of Luxembourg (RTL) to the contest, after last taking part in 1993. Meanwhile Belgium’s French-speaking Walloon broadcaster (RTBF) returns in their alternating participations with VRT, Belgium’s Dutch-speaking Flemish broadcaster. After much concern over the expiration of Australia’s five-year membership deal with the EBU, SBS quietly features among the participant list. That leaves us with the news that Romania is likely to miss the contest for the first time since their disqualification in 2016. However, the EBU are continuing to discuss terms with TVR the Romanian broadcaster.
The increased cost of participation fees, the global cost of living crunch and overall financial uncertainty, are among the reasons cited for the withdrawing broadcasters. Despite the early intentions of North Macedonia to compete in next years’ contest, the broadcaster confirmed their non-participation today.

United by Music in Malmö 2024
Back in May, Loreen stuck on everyone like a ‘Tattoo’ and became the first woman to win the Eurovision Song Contest twice. This ensured Sweden ties with Ireland on 7 victories each. Once again Malmö secured the host city bid and the contest will return to the city after it last hosted in 2013. The contest will take place in the Malmö Arena on May 7, 9 and 11.
