After a controversial Eurovision Song Contest 2024 which saw a number of incidents raised to the European Broadcasting Union’s attention from the broadcasters and delegations, the EBU has now confirmed an independent review will take place.
Eurovision Song Contest 2024 under EBU review
Last month, following the conclusion of Eurovision 2024, the EBU released a public statement addressing the concerns that had been raised by various delegations and broadcasters throughout the week. Now, in a report first publicised by Dutch media outlet RTL Boulevard, the EBU has confirmed it is taking the matter further. An independent review is now underway to scrutinise the complaints raised in further detail. Interviews will take place with members of the competing delegations. There will also be an option to remain anonymous.
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) strives to continuously improve its services and events. In order to further strengthen the Eurovision Song Contest, we have asked an independent expert to look at ESC 2024 in Malmö to share insights and lessons with the EBU governing bodies to support the continuous improvement of this global event.
RTL Boulevard also revealed that Norway has presented its case to the investigation. Meanwhile the Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS is evaluating its response following the outcome of the investigation. This comes after the EBU received a total of 13 complaints after the contest, concerning backstage incidents and safe working environment practices. This includes issues raised by RTVE, AVROTROS, RTVSLO, RTP, Bambie Thug, Gåte, reports that six countries considered last minute withdrawals, as well as concerns over the EBU’s flag policy.
