Day 2: Wales makes its debut on the Junior Eurovision stage – REVIEW

ESCXTRA are live from Minsk for day 2 of rehearsals ahead of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2018!  Today’s schedule The countries rehearsing today, in chronological order, are Italy, Kazakhstan, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Serbia, The Netherlands, Ukraine and Wales. Have a look at the full detailed rehearsal schedule by clicking here! The final country to rehearse today is Manw from Wales. We have just watched the first run through of Perta. Rehearsal review Wales begins their performance with the opening of an envelope camera shot.  Four backing dancers and a lot of group choreography open this performance with the instrumental, before Manw begins her first verse. Flowers adorn the screens above the stage whilst the screens behind her paint the picture of beautiful Welsh countryside.  There is some light choreography each chorus from Manw and her dancers – nothing too taxing but a lot of great arm movement  The performance is ended with the letterbox effect, closing the screen.  We think the camerawork is pretty using some great close-ups of the group on stage. The outfit does lead us to think about Thriller… there are lots of black and red feathers on the shoulder pads for both Manw and her dancers. Watch …

Day 2: An edgy performance and important message from Ukraine’s Darina – REVIEW

ESCXTRA are live from Minsk for day 2 of rehearsals ahead of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2018!  Today’s schedule The countries rehearsing today, in chronological order, are Italy, Kazakhstan, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Serbia, The Netherlands, Ukraine and Wales. Have a look at the full detailed rehearsal schedule by clicking here! Next up to rehearse today is Darina Krasnovetska from Ukraine. We have just watched the first run through of Say Love live on screen and here is our initial overview. Rehearsal review As soon as the song begins we are immediately drawn in with immensely quick camera transitions… perhaps twenty before a word is sung! Upon the first verse commencing, the camera spins around Darina before switching to a shot of her red megaphone. Darina herself is wearing a white costume with lots of white flowing fabric. As we reach the chorus, the red LEDs display the lyrics in big white letters: “Say love not war… hey you lay down your arms people of the universe” which is very effective. For the “ljubov” post-chorus we switch to a black and white filter which still allows the red of the megaphone and the red detail on her costume to come through. …

Day 2: Max & Anne are ‘Together’ on the big screens – REVIEW

Have a look at the full detailed rehearsal schedule by clicking here! Next up to rehearse today is Max & Anne from The Netherlands. We have just watched the first run through of Samen live on screen and here is our initial overview. Rehearsal review The young duo start o a stage bathed in darkness with two ‘hologram’s of them on the screen behind – one big one each and another directly behind them.  Interpretive dance from the national final has returned on the satellite stage.  The pair of them are wearing very similar outfits to the national final, maybe just a little sparklier for the big stage! On the big screens behind, throughout the performance, the big holographic versions of the duo go through every stage of being together and sharing life, including taking a selfie. The word ‘together’ goes around the top screens above the stage in many languages.  Word from around the table is that this is bold and bright. Perhaps …

Have a look at the full detailed rehearsal schedule by clicking here! Next up to rehearse today is Bojana Radovanović from Serbia. We have just watched the first run through of Svet live on screen and here is our initial overview. Rehearsal review Bojana is dressed in a fairy-style white dress and a silver bow in her hair. The visual themes of this performance are purple, pink and blue and the camera shots are very soft and gentle which suit the song perfectly. The young Serbian is a fantastic performer, hitting all her notes and all the cameras first time. She sings out to the audience with all of her might and commands the stage alone fantastically. Towards the end of the song, Bojana runs over to the B-stage with her arms aloft to give the performance a climax. She continues to gesture out to the crowd and the LEDs finish with clouds on them. A lovely performance from Serbia! Watch the …

Have a look at the full detailed rehearsal schedule by clicking here! Next up to rehearse today is Anna Filipchuk from Russia. We have just watched the first run through of Unbreakable live on screen and here is our initial overview. Rehearsal review The set up of Russia’s staging consists of Anna, two backing singers, a keyboardist, a guitarist and a drummer. They are in a circle, but all facing the crowd. Anna is wearing a denim jumpsuit with pink embroidering. Her bandmates are in matching red jackets and blue jeans. The performance begins with the camera circling Anna who is in front of a black backdrop. As we move into the first chorus, we see images of hot air balloons rising up the LEDs creating that uplifting feeling. As the song progresses, Anna becomes increasingly confident in her vocals and goes for more challenging notes, hitting them successfully. For the final chorus, we see lots of different children on the LED …

We have just watched the first run through of Gosto de Tudo (Já Não Gosto de Nada) live on screen and here is our initial overview. Rehearsal review There’s a really clever portrait mode mobile phone overlay in the first chorus… featuring the Facebook live emoji reactions floating across the screen too!  The second verse features camera cuts as if she’s swiping through a gallery of images on an Instagram post!  There’s also a shot to the crowd with someone using a mobile phone camera to take an image of Rita on stage. Big kudos to Portugal for using some inventive overlays we’ve never seen before. The big bass drum instrumental is bouncing through the stadium for the Portuguese entry. Rita’s outfit is fun, casual and reflects her personality well. Watch the rehearsal! Stay tuned for our review of Anna Filipchuk’s …

Have a look at the full detailed rehearsal schedule by clicking here! Next up to rehearse today is Roksana Węgiel from Poland. We have just watched the first run through of Anyone I Want To Be live on screen and here is our initial overview. Rehearsal review Roksana’s performance begins in a black and white filter with her holding big white sunglasses to her head. We see that she is joined in stage by three female dancers and two female backing vocalists, although presumably they are still using the vocal backing track. Colour returns to the performance for the first chorus where it is revealed they are all in white “urban streetwear” with neon green reflective stripes. For the second verse, the blue lighting changes to red, with a circle of fire on the LED backdrop and floor. The dancers are dancing around Roksana, usually in a circular motion. We return to a bit of black and white for the second chorus …

We have just watched the first run through of Marchin’On live on screen and here is our initial overview. Rehearsal review The video screens reflect the setting from the music video right from the outset and throughout the performance. There’s two backing dancers on stage with Ela, one of which gets onto the piano in the second verse. By the time we go to the final chorus, there are another two backing dancers. These started on the satellite stage in the first verse and joined the main stage in the final minute. We also get a great overhead shot of Ela’s branding for the song during the middle eight. The backing dancers are all wearing the yellow cross branded shirts too. There’s elements of choreography from the music video throughout this piece.  Ela is dressed in a lovely Maltese red outfit – we …

Day 2: The full cinematic experience from Kazakhstan’s Daneliya Tuleshova – REVIEW

Have a look at the full detailed rehearsal schedule by clicking here! Next up to rehearse today is Daneliya Tuleshova from Kazakhstan. We have just watched the first run through of Ózińe Sen live on screen and here is our initial overview. Rehearsal review They may be newcomers, but Kazakhstan have planned their debut Junior Eurovision performance with the utmost precision. Their use of camera angles and effects is arguably the most advanced we’ve seen so far, with the use of the letterbox effect throughout parts of the song (see Mikolas Josef’s Lie to Me for an example). In addition there’s use of a sepia filter during specific camera transitions in which there are close-ups to Daneliya’s face. In regards to the actual staging, there is a golden pocket watch theme on the LED floor and also the backdrop to begin with. Nevertheless, the backdrop changes to a classic Disney-inspired golden sky full of clouds and birds. It’s very expensive Disney rather …
