Have a look at the full detailed rehearsal schedule by clicking here! First up to rehearse today is Melissa & Marco from Italy. We have just watched the first run through of What Is Love live on screen and here is our initial overview. Rehearsal review Well, Italy is sweet. It starts with Marco sitting on a swing on the stage in a suit before Melissa arrives in her big puffy dress and outdoor coat. There’s some beautiful moonlit staging – the moon being on the screens behind the duo. Lots of engaging with one another towards the end of this performance, as well as with the viewers at home down the camera.  There’s also a huge fairytale castle on the screens behind at the end – almost but not unlike Disneyland itself…  There’s a lot of charisma here from the young performers and they work well together on stage.  Edit: In run 2, Melissa has lost the jacket – this is …

Macedonia, Georgia, Ireland, Albania and Belarus. Last up to rehearse today is Daniel Yastremski from Belarus. We have just watched the first run through of Time live on screen and here is our initial overview. Rehearsal review LED SOFA PROP CLAXON! In all seriousness, there’s a pretty modern looking sofa shaped prop which is fully lit by LED lights around is perimeter. There’s also a basketball net and a BMX cyclist as part of the routine. There’s a lot going on. In terms of the actual performance, we start with a close up on Daniel stood centre stage before we see ripples on the floor below him and a direct look straight down the camera as the beat kicks in.  He has two backing dancers and the first run of the chorus uses a full rotation of blue strobe lighting from the back of stage.  The second verse sees two more backing dancers join Daniel on the sofa before the four dancers and Daniel go over to the …

Day 1: Pink, pink and more pink for Efi Gjika and Albania! – REVIEW

ESCXTRA are live from Minsk for day 1 of rehearsals ahead of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2018!  Today’s schedule The countries rehearsing today, in chronological order, are Armenia, Australia, Azerbaijan, Israel, France, F.Y.R. Macedonia, Georgia, Ireland, Albania and Belarus. Next up to rehearse is Efi Gjika from Albania. We have just watched the first run through of Barbie live on screen and here is our initial overview. Rehearsal review There’s one word to describe Efi’s uptempo rehearsal… PINK! The Albanian performer is dressed in a pink dress with black frills and a black embroidered heart.  The LED backdrop begins with a shooting star flying across the stage before transforming into pink. This remains the case for the majority of the performance, with the use of cartoon-style hearts, stars and a cartoon Barbie doll too! Efi’s commands the stage alone, introducing some dance moves for that first chorus instrumental breakdown. While Efi dances the breakdown away, we get lots of camera shots of the audience. As we enter the middle 8 breakdown part of the song, we switch to some frantic lighting changing between black, gold, purple and pink which looks very effective and gives the song a visual journey amongst the …

Day 1: 60s flower power colourful theme for Taylor and Ireland – REVIEW

ESCXTRA are live from Minsk for day 1 of rehearsals ahead of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2018!  Today’s schedule The countries rehearsing today, in chronological order, are Armenia, Australia, Azerbaijan, Israel, France, F.Y.R. Macedonia, Georgia, Ireland, Albania and Belarus. Next up to rehearse is Taylor Hynes from Ireland. We have just watched the first run through of IOU live on screen and here is our initial overview. Rehearsal review The screens are shouting flower power 60s styling and it’s totally reminiscent of Love Power by The KMG’s for Belgium back in that country’s… less good days at Eurovision. Taylor is starting centre stage and is giving his best Ryan Dolan strut around the stage with two backing dancers in glittery tops – the first time Ireland has sent backing dancers to Junior Eurovision… we think! Taylor has a great control over his power vocal, including his wavering runs of IOU in the chorus, as well as into the dance break.  Taylor leads the choreography in the dance break… with similar moves to Azerbaijan earlier today. The LED screens remain bright and colourful throughout, really giving a strong look and feel to this entry.  Watch the rehearsal! Stay tuned for our review …

Macedonia, Georgia, Ireland, Albania and Belarus. Next up to rehearse is Tamar Edilashvili from Georgia. We have just watched the first run through of Your Voice live on screen and here is our initial overview. Rehearsal review Tamar begins her performance laying in the centre of the B-stage. As the first verse progresses, she gets to her feet and walks over to the centre of the main stage. Once she arrives, we see an extremely effective LED full of highway traffic that harks back to the video clip for Your Voice. The lyric “Just step on your way” is also shown on the LED screens. The light beams appear during the chorus. There’s also several shots where the camera spins around Tamar to create the energetic effect the song possesses. The whole performance feels very cool and bold with Tamar commanding the stage fantastically. She is dressed in a modern twist of black and red Georgian traditional dress with the “Every vision is yours” lyric embroidered onto her …

We have just watched the first run through of Doma live on screen and here is our initial overview. Rehearsal review Marija begins her performance on the B-stage dress in a black hooded cape that covers everything but her face. We see an on screen graphic overlay containing word screen such as “fear”. She’s under a spotlight and stands halfway into the first verse. As we enter the second verse, Marija walks to the main stage, disposing of her black cape in the process. Now, we see her in a white dress with sequin detail. We then see a graphic overlay covering the screen in rain. Once this disappears, the LEDs are displaying snow as well as a bridge with a couple in the centre. As we reach the end, the lighting turns red and Marija reveals a snowflake in her hand which stays alight whilst the rest of her and the …

Macedonia, Georgia, Ireland, Albania and Belarus. Next up to rehearse is Angélina from France. We have just watched the first run through of Jamais Sans Toi live on screen and here is our initial overview. Rehearsal review We have an extremely energetic performance from France here which brings with Angélina and her two dancers, one male and one female, in the centre of the B-stage. The camera spins around them until the beat kicks in in which they walk towards the camera and onto the main stage. On the main stage, there are bench, ice cream stalls and lamppost prop and the LED screen shows an Eiffel Tower and many many leaves. This creates the feel of a park in the centre of Paris. Into the chorus, we have Angélina and her dancers recreating the “foot on knee” dance move from the video clip. The second verse sees the three performers sitting on the bench with Angélina singing towards her female friend. For the second chorus, the screens …

Macedonia, Georgia, Ireland, Albania and Belarus. Next up to rehearse is Noam Dadon from Israel. We have just watched the first run through of Children Like These live on screen and here is our initial overview. Rehearsal review We have a simple performance for Noam from Israel. It begins in a black setting with lights spinning around him on the LED floor. The camera shot mixed with the LEDs gives the effect that these lights are spinning around Noam in real life. Noam is wearing a black outfit, consisting of a modern looking jacket and jeans. As he enters the first chorus of Children Like These, we are introduced to some blue lighting. Throughout the performance Israel use lots of wide shots of the whole arena that show the full power of the light beams. As has been customary for several rehearsals thus far, the blue lighting beams change to gold for the final chorus. The final shot sees the light beams merge into a wall of white …

Macedonia, Georgia, Ireland, Albania and Belarus. Next up to rehearse is Fidan Huseynova from Azerbaijan. We have just watched the first run through of I Wanna Be Like You live on screen and here is our initial overview. Rehearsal review Azerbaijan love a prop and they’ve brought with them a light-up white box… I’m thinking Christina Metaxa’s performance for Cyprus in Moscow! Fidan begins her performance by sitting on the box in a white dress with big frills. She’s using a head microphone allowing her arms to flow in time with the music. We have subtle blue lighting to begin with an we see an image of a globe on the floor courtesy of an overhead shot. For the second verse, Fidan rises to her feet and is joined by 4 dancers, who are also in white and have lights attached to the palms of their hands. The dancers and Fidan perform the classic stand in a line with moving arms move. By this point, the lighting has changed …
