🇮🇸 Iceland: Daði Freyr and Gagnamagnið share update on 2021 entry

They're currently working on potential songs

Last month, it was confirmed that Daði Freyr and Gagnamagnið will be representing Iceland at the 2021 Eurovision Song Contest. They have recently been in the studio working on demos for their song. Now, if his recent Instagram stories are to be believed, we may be hearing the entry in two months time!

Speaking to NME, Daði explained that they are currently working on potential entries:

I’m making around 11 rough demos and ideas, then I’ll pick one and focus on that.

He went on to talk about his plans for next year:

I want to release an EP somewhere around Eurovision, but I’m not going to promise anything because I have to go on tour and do a bunch of stuff for Eurovision. Competing in Eurovision is so much more than just writing the song and doing the performance.

One story posted earlier this week revealed that 12 demos are currently in the making:

According to another story, they are currently working on a music video with Ásdís, slated for a January release. This is presumably not their entry for the contest:

How the entry will be selected and whether there will be a public vote involved remains to be seen.

Daði’s 2020 success

Daði and Gagnamagnið earned the Icelandic ticket to this year’s cancelled contest following their victory in Söngvakeppnin 2020. Despite Eurovision’s cancellation, “Think About Things” was a viral success, gaining significant traction on social media platforms including Twitter and TikTok. The track particularly earned success in the UK and Ireland, charting top 40 in the former and top 3 in the latter. Indeed, it was the first Eurovision song to chart in the UK top 40 since “Heroes” in 2015.

To capitalise on this success, Daði is also heading on a European tour in March and April of next year, the perfect build-up to his Eurovision 2021 adventure in May. The tour will most likely be the first opportunity for many Eurovision fans to hear the new Eurovision 2021 entry live!

Interview with Iceland’s Head of Delegation

Prior to today’s announcement, in an interview with ESCXTRA, Icelandic Eurovision head of delegation Felix Bergsson confirmed that talks are underway discussing how Iceland’s act will be confirmed for 2021. Check it out below!
